Climate Change: New Zealand

Climate change in New Zealand is already having an impact, and these impacts are set to increase in magnitude and extent over time. Floods, storms, droughts and fires will become more frequent unless significant action is taken to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases, which are changing the climate.

Climate Refugees

Climate refugees are people who are forced to leave their homes due to the effects of climate change. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an annual average of 21.5 million people have been forcibly displaced by weather-related events – such as floods, storms, wildfires and extreme temperatures – since 2008.

Rising Sea Levels

Carbon offsets or carbon credits are a way of reducing your carbon footprint by investing in projects that help to offset your emissions. For example, you might invest in a project that helps to reduce deforestation, which would help to offset the emissions from your car or flight.

Costs of Climate Change

Burning CO2 has a cost to society, even if it is not directly to our wallets. Each person’s emissions could quite well result in a cost to humanity of over $1,300 per year, rising to over $15,000 once the impacts of climate change on economic growth are included.

Australia Bushfires

Almost two years ago we watched Australia bushfires burn as never seen before. Starting before July 2019 and lasting until March 2020 the intense bushfires burned an area around 24 million hectares (59 million acres). This area roughly equal to the terrestrial United Kingdom (UK).

Biochar

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced during the pyrolysis process, which is a thermochemical decomposition of biomass at a temperature of ≤700°C in the absence or limited supply of oxygen. It is an important tool for carbon sequestration and has potential applications in agriculture, water filtration, and soil remediation.
